A lot of people ask me: “Adopt or shop?” My answer? Do what’s right for you and your lifestyle—but if you’re going to shop, do it responsibly. Start with research, not impulse. Don’t choose a dog just because it looks cool or “badass.” Instead, ask yourself: What’s your ideal life with a dog? • Do you want an adventure buddy to hike and socialize with? • A running partner for dog-and-human races? • A laid-back companion for family walks and cozy evenings? • A working dog to hunt or help with outdoor life? • A quiet presence for a low-key, independent lifestyle? Whatever it is, find a breed (or mix) that truly fits. Be cautious with trending breeds or those known for extreme traits. Some large, powerful breeds require experienced handling, while others bred for looks may suffer from chronic health issues, like difficulty breathing or seeing. Make sure the dog’s needs and traits align with what you can realistically provide. PSA: If a dog is being marketed as “rare,” there’s a good chance it’s inbred or secretly mixed. Always ask questions and dig deeper. Congratulations to Koda for graduating from our very first online obedience program—all the way from New York! When Koda joined us, he was full of energy, had a strong prey drive, and occasionally practiced some selective hearing during basic obedience. But with consistent guidance and training, he learned how to regulate his excitement and stay focused. Now, Koda can confidently walk off-leash—even around deer, squirrels, and birds—and proudly demonstrate his new skills in public training environments. Way to go, Koda! Did you know? Dogs can form deep friendships—just like we do! As social pack animals, dogs often thrive on play, grooming, and bonding with others—sometimes preferring dogs of similar temperament or even the same breed. Whether in the wild or in our homes, we’ve observed dogs forming lasting bonds, often choosing a few close companions they “click” with. Just like people, dogs can have best friends—those they simply vibe with! Spending time with familiar, trusted dog friends can reduce anxiety and promote healthier social habits. For dogs that are more timid or reactive, positive social interactions can help build confidence and ease in new environments. The saying “you are who you surround yourself with” applies to our dogs, too! That’s why in my teaching, I always recommend keeping your dog’s social circle small and intentional—especially for puppies. Choose balanced, calm dogs who model appropriate behavior and help create safe, positive experiences. In the video clip, you’ll see Atlas with Ringo—his “big brother” and the only dog I allowed him to regularly socialize with during his early development.
